Our Name: “Wescustago”
The chorale is named after the Wescustago River, also known as the Royal River, which flows through North Yarmouth, Maine. ‘Wescustago’ is derived from two Abenaki words: ‘Wescus’, meaning ‘clear’ and ‘tegooe’, meaning ‘a stream moved by wind or tide’. Hence, ‘Wecustago’ is ‘the clear tidal river.’ We hope that the Wescustago Youth Chorale experience is one where the the spirit or tide of music will move each teen singer as she or he grows to clarify her or his identity.
The Chorale’s mission is to provide a non-sectarian auditioned choral group for talented young men and women in grades three through twelve that will offer a positive peer environment for both musical and social development. Musicianship is developed through instruction in vocal production, sight singing, ear training, and performance skills. The source of social development is an atmosphere within the chorale where human sensitivity, character, self-discipline and confidence are nutured. The model of inclusion is at the very core of our structure.
